What is considered a Pet Emergency?

While some emergencies may be obvious such as a limp, vomiting, or diarrhea, others, such as constipation and respiratory distress may be more difficult to identify. Knowing when your pet is in distress and when to bring them to the vet is extremely important for your pet’s health and livelihood.

Some of the most common pet emergencies include:

Acute Vomiting and Diarrhea: Among the most common pet emergencies, vomiting and diarrhea can be indicative of a number of potential health problems, ranging from gastrointestinal problems like obstruction or food allergies to secondary issues such as cancer. As vomiting and diarrhea can also cause dehydration, getting your pet to the vet as soon as possible is very important.

Difficulty Urinating: If your pet is struggling to pass urine, this can be an indicator of inflammation, kidney problems, blood clots, or a urinary tract infection. At Country Creek Animal Hospital, our team can determine the reason behind their difficulty urinating and prescribe medication for alleviating the condition.

Trauma: Even if your pet seems able to walk without pain following a traumatic accident, trauma can cause internal injuries which may take longer to become visible. Seeking veterinary attention following any accidental bumps or trauma allows our Allen vets to check your pet for internal bleeding and provide owners with recommendations for alleviating any accompanying pain.

Difficulty Breathing: An indicator that the lungs or airways have been compromised, respiratory distress can be caused by a number of different conditions, including allergic reaction, infection, heart distress, and trauma. If your pet is breathing heavily, contact our Allen vets immediately. We can check the lungs and airways using digital X-rays and provide a diagnosis as to the cause of your pet’s breathing problems.

Seizures: While the causes of seizures can vary from head injury to low blood sugar, all seizures can be life threatening. If you pet is experiencing this condition, contact Dr. Daryl and Dr. Lollie Mensik immediately to schedule an emergency appointment. In the meantime, make sure your pet is in a safe environment. If your pet experience multiple seizure in a row or a seizure that lasts several minutes, contact a 24-hour emergency pet hospital immediately. After immediate care has been provided, Country Creek Animal Hospital can coordinate follow-up care.

Accidental Ingestion: Pets are notorious for eating things they shouldn’t. If your pet has consumed any toxic substances such as cleaners, medication, paint, rodent killer, fertilizer or other edible yet toxic foods such as chocolate, onions, or xylitol-containing products, they are at risk of accidental poisoning. Seeking immediate veterinary care can help save your pet from long-term internal damage.
